Big-wave riding was worked out here first.
Makaha has the best surfing on the west side and the history to back it, with winter faces around 25 feet. Calm summer days turn it into a swim and dive spot, though the steep sand bottom throws a mean backwash. Lifeguards year-round. It's a local beach first... act accordingly.
