Our take

The wetland floor of Hanalei Valley is a national wildlife refuge, closed to entry and busy with endangered Hawaiian waterbirds. This is the sanctioned way to see it. The Fish and Wildlife viewpoint sits just southwest of Princeville Center, open Tuesday through Saturday.
