Our take

Kukaʻemoku, the needle, stands 1,200 feet off the valley floor, and a paved walk climbs to the lookout with an ethnobotanical loop below. This is the site of the 1790 battle of Kepaniwai. Non-residents book ahead at gostateparks.hawaii.gov, ten dollars to park and five a head. Gates run 7 am to 6 pm.
