Kalaupapa National Historical Park
A sacred, sobering peninsula. Guided tours only.
For more than a century, people with Hansen's disease were taken from their families and sent to this remote peninsula below the cliffs. Today you can only visit on a guided tour, booked ahead with a permit, and visitors need to be 16 or older. Go if you can. If the tour isn't in the cards, the lookout at Palaʻau State Park gives you the view from the top.
