St. Benedict's Painted Church
A tiny 1899 church painted wall to ceiling by its own priest.
Father John Velghe had no training and used house paint on wood, and the result still floors people: Bible scenes wrapping the whole interior of St. Benedict's. It remains an active parish above Honaunau. Visits are self-guided and free, donations welcome. Go in daylight, since the lights mostly come on for mass.
